The going was relatively easy as they treaded cautiously down the stone-topped steps. They had gone only twenty yards in the eerily lit passage when the steps ended and the path became more level. It remained that way for thirty yards and then veered to the north.
Blake looked past Underhill to where the basement door was still visible. If they continued, they would lose sight of the entrance. “What do you think?” Blake asked. “Do you want to chance going further?”
Mopping his head with a handkerchief, Underhill took a deep breath. “You’re not the only one out of shape. I guess we could go a little further but I’d advise stopping if we come to any forks or passages leading off from the main path. Lord knows I don’t fancy getting lost down here.”
— Ron Shiflet, “They Thrive in Darkness”
